Halifax: Top 5 Autumn Day Trips

No one would argue that Nova Scotia is a spectacular place to visit during the summer. But just because the days are growing shorter and the leaves are beginning to turn doesn’t mean it’s time to head indoors just yet. The Canadian autumn has plenty to offer in the way of natural beauty and fun outdoor activities. Here are a few of our favorites to get you started, all within a few hours’ drive from Halifax.

#1 – Ride the World’s Highest Tides

The nearby Bay of Fundy is home to an incredible natural phenomena–the highest tidal range on earth. Over 160 billion tons of water flows in and out of the bay with each tide cycle! According to Tidal Bore Rafting, September 9-11 are the best days of the year if you want to experience rafting on the world’s highest tides.Head over to Shubenacadie and climb aboard your raft to experience the wettest, the wildest, and the most thrilling ride of your life!

#2 – Get Spooked at Annapolis Royal

Dating back to 1605, Annapolis Royal is the oldest continually-inhabited European settlement in Nova Scotia. The town is littered with cemeteries and has the most heritage properties per capita of any town in Canada. To get yourself geared up for Halloween, explore the Ghosts of Sinclair Inn exhibit and then stroll through the historic cemetery in search of the oldest tombstone. (Here’s a fun hint–there’s a typo on it!)

#3 –Victoria Park

Truro may not be at the top of your favorite destination list, but once you see the idyllic scenery of the city’s Victoria Park, you might change your mind. A twenty-minute hike through the greenspace takes you up winding wooden staircases past wishing wells, wildlife, even a waterfall. It’s particularly vibrant in the fall, when all the leaves are turning!

#4 – Take a Winery or Brewery Tour

Once all the summer crowds die down, autumn is the perfect time to get out there and sample some local wines, brews, and ales. Wine-o’s will love the selection at Luckett and Gaspereau Vineyards, while beer aficionados will enjoy the craft beers at Townhouse Antigonish or Boxing Rock Brewery.

#5 – Pumpkins!

Nothing says autumn like pumpkins, and no one does pumpkins like Nova Scotia. Watch the giant pumpkin races at the Pumpkin Regatta in Windsor or tour the Farmer Dill Pumpkin Patch.
