Despite the NASA footage of Apollo 10 rehearsing a Moon landing in May, 1969, being some of the most watched video in history, it seems at least one thing was missed. A white, round UFO can be seen flying underneath the Command Service Module, zooming away in the opposite direction. What was it?

The video above, posted to YouTube on Feb. 3, focuses on the critical moment when the Apollo 10 crew were testing the equipment and procedures for a Moon landing, which actually took place on the historic following flight of Apollo 11, about a month later.

As the lander pilot, Gene Cernan, takes the first color video of flight over the lunar surface, a white, circular UFO suddenly comes into view and flies directly underneath the spaceship, going the other way.

Whatever the unidentified flying object was, it traveled in a nearly straight line, at a constant speed and is clearly below the CSM, which was flying about a mile above the Moon, when the video was shot. It can be clearly seen at about the one minute mark in the video, a clip from the official footage of the Apollo 10 mission, and broadcast around the world, live on television at the time.

While the fairly dated and grainy video plays out, there are some imaging anomalies obvious. Particularly what look like optical glitches sparkling momentarily and winking out. But, the UFO in this sequence travels in one direction and appears throughout the nearly 10 seconds it takes for the unidentified flying object to move out of camera range.

Considering the dramatic nature of the dress rehearsal for a Moon landing, and the fact that, just a few moments earlier, the Apollo 10 lunar lander pitched out of control and nearly crashed into the Moon, it may be understandable that a few seconds of the unusual event might have been overlooked.

But, considering that NASA has taken to releasing virtually all the photographic footage (both video and still images) from every space mission since the program began, it's high time for eagle-eyed observers to ask the question: What the heck was that thing?
