Doctors will use Big Data in Cancer Care

A group of oncologists in the United States launched an ambitious project to cure cancer patients. According to the Wall Street Journal, the idea is to use Big Data to collect information that will aid in future treatments.

With technology, doctors can consult the database and search for advice about treatments. All information will be based on information from people who have similar diseases.

The collection and analysis of medical data, however, is fraught with challenges. One of them is to find software that will accept clinical information from the various health equipment such as an electrocardiogram, for example. Technology, still in prototype, managed to collect about 100 thousand records of breast cancer of 27 hospitals that use different electronics.

About 1.6 million Americans are diagnosed with cancer each year, but in 95% of cases the details of the treatments are locked in files or in electronic systems isolated. "There is a wealth of information in these cases. This could save many lives," said Allen Lichter, head of the group.

The project should officially begin between March and September 2014.
