Team USA sets Basketball scoring record

Carmelo Anthony and Team USA put on a show for the ages against Nigeria from beautiful London, England Thursday.

With a full day off Wednesday to recover and soak in the sights and sounds of London, the US Men's National Team came back rested and revamped Thursday to drop an Olympic single-game scoring record 156 points in a dominating 83-point victory over Nigeria (1-2) from the Olympic Park Basketball Arena.

The team set all-time USA Olympic records for points scored in a game with 156, three-pointers made with 29, field goal percentage which stood at a remarkable 71.1% at games end and margin of victory at 83 Thursday.

Their domination began with a blistering 49-25 first quarter start behind 14 points from Kobe Bryant and 12 from Anthony on 11-of-14 shots from deep as a unit.

Unfortunately for the Nigerians the Americans sharp shooting first quarter would be a precursor of what was to come as they would turn a 78-45 halftime lead into a jaw-dropping 83-point history-making Olympic final margin.

By the end of three quarters Anthony had tallied an incredible 37 points, already breaking the US record for points in an Olympic game which stood at 34.

The 6-8, 230-pound jump-shooting small forward would go on to finish at that mark, but not before he dropped 13-of-17 total shots and 10-of-12 from three-point range on the speechless Nigerian National Team.

He has scored 53 points on an amazing 19-of-22 shooting from the floor in just 26 minutes over the last two Olympic games.

Russell Westbrook added 21 points for the Americans on a deft 7-of-8 shooting from the floor while Bryant finished with 16 points after scoring 14 in the first quarter.

Team USA's leading scorer in these 2012 London Olympic Games, Kevin Durant, only needed to muster 14 points in the win as the game was out of reach within minutes of starting.

LeBron James tallied six points and five assists on the night.

Nigeria was led by former Arizona State Sun Devil forward Ike Diogu who notched a respectable 27 points in the loss. The bruising forward also hauled down seven rebounds - four on the offensive side of the ball.

The previous record for most points in an Olympic basketball game was 138 most recently held by Brazil in 1988.

Team USA's hot shooting continued throughout the contest as they nailed a double-taking 71.1% of their shots from the field and an insane 29-of-46 attempts from behind the three-point arc.
