Wednesday's night sky over Vancouver, BC played host to a pulsating UFO that was captured on video during sky-watching activities from Burnaby Mountain Park on July 27, 2011. The UFO was detected by a night vision camera and tracked for nearly five minutes as it travelled SE to NW before disappearing behind a stand of trees. During this period, the UFO was first seen being overtaken by a second, faster-moving object before amplifying its luminous output in what veteran sky-watchers describe as a “power-up” incident.

While in flight, the UFO performed multiple power-ups, inviting comparison with another object recorded four nights earlier near Vancouver City Hall.

Regarding the possibility that balloons could play a role in Vancouver UFO observations, there are several points to consider. Smaller balloons, including weather balloons, typically rely upon lighter-than-air gasses for buoyancy in flight. Their courses are determined by wind conditions, which change continuously throughout their ascent. This causes erratic changes in both speed and direction of flight that are easy to observe. Their surfaces are mono-coloured, thereby equally reflective on all sides. If the balloon rotates, this will have no effect on the luminous output from its reflective surfaces.

Hot air balloons, while typically displaying more complex colors and designs are also much larger and easier to identify at range using telephoto optics on a camera system. There are no commercial hot air balloon formation flights over Vancouver and no flights available in the Fraser Valley in the hours after sunset, a time when the majority of recent UFO sightings were reported to have taken place.

UFO’s demonstrating on-camera stable, independent powered flight, pulsating light displays and night time operations defy characterization as balloons for these very reasons. The UFO’s captured on video during flights over Vancouver both evade NASA’s timetables and defy sceptical explanation. To paraphrase the words of Atlantis Commander Chris Ferguson, in order to understand the UFO phenomena, we must retire our conventional models for interpreting perceptions in order to “change the way we view the universe”.
