Canada's retail industry offers grads new career opportunities

(NC) — For many university and college students, retail is often a popular choice for summer or part time employment. However, upon receiving their diplomas or degrees, graduates are not often considering retail as top of mind to begin their full-time careers.

Canada's diverse and dynamic retail companies offer a wide range of exciting and rewarding employment opportunities in a variety of disciplines, including finance, marketing, store management and human resources. “As the retail sector grows and evolves, Canadian retail companies are looking to recent graduates with a variety of skill sets to bring a fresh perspective to their business,” observes Elizabeth Evans, director, Ted Rogers School of Retail Management, Ryerson University.

Loblaw Companies Limited, Canada's largest grocery retailer, offers college and university grads a full-time position and the opportunity to learn many different areas of the business. Over the course of 18 months recent grads, learn about store operations, merchandising, and supply chain to gain a strong background before being placed in their permanent full time position. Called grad@Loblaw, the program highlights the variety of opportunities in the sector for keen graduates with a variety of interests and skills.

Russell Dudley recently finished the grad@Loblaw program and is now working as an associate merchant in the deli cheese category. He comments, “The grad@Loblaw program provided me with great exposure to different areas of retail and access to senior executives that has given me the tools and knowledge I need to be successful, as I start my career at Loblaw.

College and university students who have graduated within the last three years can visit www.loblawgrad.ca to learn more about the program and how to apply to the program.
