Finland: When your hair dye is toxic

Five DIY hair colour products were removed from shelves late last year after several problems were discovered by Finland’s chemical safety watchdog Tukes. The products lacked warning labels and some were tested for banned ingredients, according to the agency.

Two of the products were later allowed back in stores. As of November last year, home hair dyes sold in Finland are required to clearly warn users of known irritants and state that hair colours are not intended for use on people under the age of 16.

The Finnish customs lab tested 15 over-the-counter hair dyes last year. The study found that a dozen of the batch lacked allergy warnings and proper descriptions of ingredients. One of the dye boxes contained forbidden ingredients while the safety of chemicals in another could not be verified.

“Finnish cosmetics legislation is based on EU regulations. Restrictions are grounded in scientific risk assessment,” says Pauliina Kanerva, a lawyer at the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency Tukes.

In the UK, a home colouring session triggered a lethal allergic reaction in a woman last fall.
