Halifax: Study says CFL team possible

(OpenFile.ca) -- It's crappy weather to even think about sitting outdoors watching football, but a rah-rah study called Playing in the Big Leagues says Halifax is one of five Canadian cities with "the fundamental market conditions" for a CFL franchise," the National Post reports.

The study says Ottawa (which already has a conditional franchise if they can clean up Frank Clair Stadium), Quebec, Moncton and some creature called Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge also have the right stuff.

It also says (and thanks to @PeterMooreHouse for pointing this out):

"Neither the Moncton nor the Halifax market alone is large enough to ensure long-term viability of a CFL team. If a franchise does come to the Maritimes, its owners will have to work hard to market the team as a regional franchise—one that can attract fans from the neighbouring provinces as well, and do so on an ongoing basis.”

So, as usual, we'd have to fight over the team, fight over the location, and continue to call each other names. Same as always.

I'm always a little dubious when I see a report from something called the "Conference Board of Canada"—if they're anything like the rah-rah-sis-boom-new conventioncentre crowd here, I'm not 100 percent sure they're always paying attention to their facts.

More interestingly, though—is his going to give a new push to the pro-stadium crowd? We've already looked into the stadium consultation process, and it seems there isn't much of a push to make smaller voices heard, or even to make sure we want the thing.

A CFL stadium would need at least 20,000-25,000 seats. FIFA needs a minimum of 20,000, so the two ideas might not be mutually exclusive.

With an CFL franchise pushing our stadium dreams, at least we wouldn't have to focus so much on the horribly corrupt FIFA organization's Women's World Cup event—a one off—as the main impetus for building the new facility. We could at least hinge it on something longer-term, and, in my opinion, more interesting. That's right. I said it. Soccer is boring.
