Ottawa Arts and Entertainment: Weekend Round-Up

Musically, you’re going to have to make some tough choices this weekend. Zaphod’s 20th anniversary celebrations continue, with DJs, The Polytones, Sound of Lions, and a bit of burlesque stopping by over the next few days. Tonight, indie rockers Plants and Animals take to Ritual, while John K. Samson of The Weakerthans fame stops by the Bronson Centre. GigSpace continues their Indie Music Nights featuring Shannon Rose, while Paper Beat Scissors (whose video is above) has a cd release party over at Mercury Lounge. Kalle Mattson and Rococode will be at Mavericks Friday night, while down in the basement of the Clocktower, Garaga and The Johnnies will be playing up a storm. Saturday you’ve got a chance to hurl a few expletives at cancer, or take in some local bluesy rock with John Carroll and the Epic Proportions down at the Elmdale. Broken Hearts and the Madmen will be out at the Black Sheep that night, or you can crash a Kitchen Party down on Rochester St. Beau’s is hosting the Hilotrons out in VanKleek Hill – don’t worry, they’re providing transportation for those car-less folk. Cafe Dekcuf will feature a night of stalk rock with The Creeps, Sonic Avenues and The Victim Party, and you can wind the weekend down with Jack Pine and the Fire out at the Sheep.

In art openings, the Manx launches Stephanie Sears’ show on Sunday afternoon, while that same day Karina Kraenzle’s show ‘Bloom’ opens at Cube. Artist Ron Silliman will be at Gallery 101 for a workshop and artist talk on Saturday, and tonight there will be two artists talking down at Patrick John Mills gallery. Series 10 Dance’s latest show starts tonight and runs until Saturday.

For you movie buffs, Bowich is hosting Bohemian Nights with delicious food, jazz, and silent films. The Even Wars Have Limits film festival wraps up tonight, while the Diverciné film festival continues all weekend long. Spielberg fans can catch ‘Back to the Future’ and contribute to a good cause on Sunday afternoon.

In miscellaneous rounding-ups, there’s an Irish trivia night, a cash mob, and a musical. Anything else that we need to know of, Ottawa?
