Niche Markets: Natural Health Products show Canadian success

LIVE CHAT

(WireService.ca) - Burlington, Ontario based Shian Naturals Health & Beauty Products, finds that by producing high quality, unique, niche market products, and distributing them only through independently owned retail stores across Canada, both manufacturers and the retailers can compete successfully with the big box, multi-national, discount retailers.

“Small, Canadian, independent retailers need unique, quality products on their shelves that aren’t available in the big box, discount stores in order to attract customers,” says Brian Brown, Co-Founder and President of Shian Naturals. “Smaller, local retailers simply cannot compete with the heavily discounted, and heavily manufacturer subsidised, prices on national brand products sold at stores like Wal-Mart or Canadian Tire. The smaller, independent retailers just don’t sell enough volume to be able to negotiate and offer the same levels of discounts to customers.” says Shelly Suddaby, Co-Founder and National Sales Manager at Shian Naturals, who talks to small, Canadian retailers every day.

“There are many, many opportunities for small Canadian manufacturers to produce products that fit niche markets in Canada. Markets that are too small for the big retailers to care about fulfilling, but certainly large enough to support small, lean, efficiently operated manufacturers, distributors, and retailers.” says Brown.

Shian Naturals produces a line of high quality, all natural, unscented skin, hair, and body care products that are designed for people who have allergies, or sensitivities, to synthetic fragrances, dyes, or other potential toxins found in most name brand personal care products. Designed for environmentally, and health, conscious Canadian people who wish to, or need to, make healthier lifestyle choices about what they put on, and in, their bodies. Shian Naturals products are sold in over 60 independently owned and operated drug stores, pharmacies, health food stores, and health related clinics in many Canadian locations and growing.

“Our products are a great example of the types of Canadian made, niche market products that many Canadians want, or need, but can’t find at the large, discount retailers.” says Brown. “We pride ourselves at being able to support small, independent business in Canada, support the Canadian economy at local levels, and help sustain, or create, Canadian jobs. We’re celebrating our first full year in business soon and are very pleased with our progress so far. It couldn’t happen without  the support shown by all of our savvy, independent retail partners who have chosen to put Shian Naturals products on their shelves. We hope Canadian consumers will continue to support their local retailers too.” Suddaby adds.

Brown goes on to say “The vast majority of businesses in Canada are small, local, independently owned and operated businesses. Small business is what built our country, and can continue to support our country into the future, as long as Canadians remember to try to buy Canadian, and remember to look, and buy, from their smaller, local retailers whenever possible when searching for these types of specialty products. We are small. Our retailers are small. We all have limited resources to advertise, and promote, and educate the public that we are out there and what we have to offer, but, together, as a team, we can offer Canadian consumers innovative, high quality products, along with much higher levels of personalized customer service that’s just not available at the large big box retailers. We’re finding that is what Canadian consumers want and appreciate when they find it.”
