Conservatives chastise Trudeau on charity issue

The federal Conservative government is criticizing Liberal leader Justin Trudeau of allegedly refusing to repay a charity $20,000 for speaking at an event back in June of 2012.

As reported by Leslie Mackinnon for the CBC on June 14th 2013, Trudeau was asked to speak about empowerment and youth by the Grace Foundation -- a charity based out of Saint John New Brunswick which assists senior citizens.

In addition to the $20,000 Trudeau was paid for the event, travel costs, meals and accommodation were also paid for by the charity. The final ticket revenue only came up to $6,000 and the charity said it had to fire an employee due to the financial hardship this event created for their charity.

Immigration Minister Jason Kenney vocally criticized Trudeau for accepting the money.

“He went and took a $20,000 cheque from a group of seniors trying to do a fundraiser to buy furniture," Kenney said scathingly in the House of Commons June 14th.

Spokesperson for Trudeau, Kate Monfette told the CBC June 14th she was surprised at the charity’s dissatisfaction, and was curious why they had waited so long after the event took place to express their concern.

"[The charity] did not contact anyone for reimbursement until almost one year after the event, [and had] previously indicated that they were satisfied."

There have been many  financial scandals recently with the sitting government, it seems they are starting to feel the heat, and may be attempting to deflect attention away from larger concerns such as missing three billion dollars, among other incidents.

The government could also be realizing that Justin Trudeau and the Liberals are viable candidates for winning the next federal election, so they be using offensive tactics to remind the public of possible faults in Trudeau himself, and by extension, the Liberal party.
