Charities decline Trudeau's offer for repayment

After the scandal earlier this month that saw Justin Trudeau in hot water by the Conservatives over allegations he was taking more money from charities- via paid speaking engagements- than he was giving, Trudeau confidants have revealed not a single charity has claimed money Trudeau offered to return.

The story began in March when the Grace Foundation wrote to the Speakers Spotlight, as they had hired Trudeau for the charity event. The New Brunswick Based charity had requested compensation as they claimed the event ended up costing them more money than was made. This letter ended up in the hands of members of the Harper government who had a field day with it.

The bad press and potential scandal was adequately staved off however, through Trudeau’s use of transparency. He voluntarily released financial information about how much money he made through the speaking engagements- $1.3 million since 2006- and even extended an offer to other charities, including the Grace Foundation, that he would pay back any funds they had given him to speak at their events.

Interestingly, after Trudeau offered to repay the Grace Foundation through cash, or by giving another speech for free this time, Trudeau spokesperson Kate Monfette told the Canadian Press June 26th, that they have yet to respond to his offer, making it unclear if they even want the funds back.

In addition, Liberal spokesperson Kate Monfette has said no other charity Trudeau has worked with has taken him up on his offer for repayment.

"We have made initial contact with all 17 organizations, so far there has been no request for a refund," Monfette told the Canadian Press June 26th.

What this indicates is a failure on the part of the Conservatives to spark public backlash and damage the image of Justin Trudeau.

Instead, the way in which Trudeau has handled this potential scandal has only increased his commitment to transparency, and maintained a positive public image. Try again, Conservatives!
