Senate Abolition Plans: Saskatchewan Denies

REGINA (POSTMEDIA) — The Saskatchewan government denied a National Post report Friday that Premier Brad Wall plans to introduce a motion in the provincial legislature this fall calling for the abolition of the Senate.

The article quotes an unnamed “a senior government official”  as saying this is intended to “get the ball rolling with the other provinces.”

Provincial government spokeswoman Kathy Young said in an email to reporters Friday morning that the story “is not accurate.”

“No one from the Premier’s office did this interview. No decision has been made with regard to introducing legislation calling for the abolition of the Senate,” she wrote. “Such decisions on the legislative agenda of the government are subject to the government caucus. They are debated and all members given the opportunity to provide input into the final decision.”
