Halifax Theatre for Young People — HRM’s only facility-based professional theatre company exclusively for young audiences—have put together two very different one act plays as a double bill for their fall 2011 production. In the Fall, suitable for all ages, adapted by Chris Heide from a short story by Alistair MacLeod, is set in 1960s Cape Breton and deals with “the coming of age of two brothers as they confront the reality of death in their rural existence.” Hannah Moscovitch’s (see more from Moscovitch November 29-December 4 when 2b theatre present her double bill of The Russian Play & Mexico City) In This World is “a complex exploration of race, class and sex as experienced by two urban, contemporary girls in high school.” Dealing with complex racial and sexual politics, In This World is intended for ages 13 and over. Both plays are directed by Tessa Mendel. Despite the company focus on youth issues, the fall production promises edgy, fresh interpretations of life-changing events and coming of age themes to resonate with all ages.

The shows run at Alderney Landing opening this evening to November 20. November 10-12 and 16-19 at 7:30pm, tickets $10/$15/$40.
