Gateway Unveils Plans for a Glitzy Ontario Casino

Gateway casino has revealed plans to build a 100,000 square foot “Starlight” branded facility in London. The facility will be located on Wonderland Road near Wharncliffe, in London, Ontario

According to a news report by CTV News, the plan for the $75m facility was made public during a meeting at the London Chamber of Commerce. The casino will include 900 slots and 40 table games, along with several restaurants.

There had been a proposed plan for a similar project in development for Western Fairgrounds in 2017. But this plan didn’t see the light of day as the budgeted amount of $140m for the project, proved to be too much for Gateway and eventually, a decision was made to do away with any plan to continue that particular project.

The plan was to buy the land that was at the time utilized by a casino which was then owned by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Commission. Gateway had bought the casino and wanted to either re-negotiate the lease on the land or to simply buy the land. The project was eventually canned and the London project introduced instead.

This new proposal will exclude the 125-room hotel that was part of the 2017 casino proposal for Western Fairgrounds that had been presented to council 18 months ago.

Carrie Kormos, Gateway’s chief marketing and communications officer, explained: “We’ve tried to revamp our proposal and our plans to be suitable to that neighbourhood or that commercial zone. However, the number of amenities and the level of fit and finish will be just as spectacular as we were planning at our previous site.”

CTV News reported that Gateway Casinos will meet the Planning and Environment Committee in July to rezone its planned location on Wonderland Road near Wharncliffe Road in London. Construction is slated to start in September once they bag the approval of the council.

“We really envision London being the hub of the entertainment experience in Southwestern Ontario,” said Kormos. “Whether you’re looking for a night out of live entertainment or dining or gambling, we’re going to have lots of options to suit all of those tastes. Many of our restaurants also will be family-friendly, which we think is exciting,” she added.

According to a report by the National Post, Gary Macartney, the Head of the London’s Chamber of Commerce, has assured the public, that the Casino would be providing about 700 sustainable jobs for the locals who seek employment and is super elated about the location of the new casino.

Macartney added that the location of the  Casino will help ensure that Wharncliffe Road, in London, becomes not just a thriving area but also a commercial hub. He said that it was not a coincidence that the proposed location is in the middle of one of the busiest business areas in the region and also has easy access to highways 401 and 402.

Macartney added; “Where the 401 and 402 meet, that is at the apex of the busiest trade corridor on the planet. It’s strategically important for them, and for us,”
