Occupy Wall Street Movement linked to America's Delcaration of Independence



Did the authors of the U.S. Declaration of Independence believe that there may be a time in the future, that America's government may not be operating with the consent of "the governed". Does the U.S. Declaration of Independence provide the right of American citizens to rejuvenate their own democracy, in order to protect the fundamental "We, the People" concept of American constitutionalism?

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security...

Michael More on a recent episode of the Jimmy Fallon show shared a key insight on the Wall Street Movement for Americans. He indicated that all Americans must be prepared to become "their own leaders", because elite-driven leadership structures have failed the American people. The Wall Street Movement substantively criticizes these capitalistocratic structures.

The Wall Street Movement can only become successful if movement members can be at least as inspired as the authors of the American Declaration of Independence itself. That is to say, the Wall Street Movement must be prepared to present a new participatory democratic, ecologically-sensitized, and non-capitalist model of American society that can replace the status quo. Unless the Wall Street Movement can do this, arguably, they would have failed to do little more then let off some steam.
