Crime down in Canada but up in Newfoundland and Labrador

The latest crime rate statistics released today by Statistics Canada show that the severity and overall crime rate is at its lowest level in Canada since 1973, dropping five percent from 2009 levels. However, crime rates in Newfoundland and Labrador increased last year. Police in this province reported a 13 percent increase in the number of calls in 2010. In St. John’s, crime was up by seven percent, with the severity of violent crime in the capital city rising 29 percent. Robberies in St. John’s were up by 53 percent, motor vehicle thefts by 66 percent, and break and enters by three percent.

The new numbers mean St. John’s now has the seventh highest metropolitan crime index and is rated the 12th highest in the country for reported violent crime.
