Canadian Football's Players of the Week announced
TORONTO -- Buck Pierce, Chris McKenzie, Noel Prefontaine and Jerome Messam were named the Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Week for week 12, the Canadian Football League announced today.
The four players were chosen by a panel of judges including: former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde, now of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.
Following his gutsy performance in Winnipeg’s win over the Alouettes, Blue Bombers quarterback Buck Pierce is the Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season.
By completing 69 per cent of his passes for 312 yards and a pair of touchdown passes to receivers Greg Carr and Terrence Edwards, Pierce managed to outduel Als quarterback Anthony Calvillo, en-route to a narrow 25-23 victory at Molson Stadium.
Pierce’s efforts in the win allowed the Bombers to maintain their lead in the East Division, extending their cushion over the second-place Alouettes to four points.
On the defensive front, Saskatchewan defensive back Chris McKenzie is the Defensive Player of the Week. In addition to registering three tackles and one sack, McKenzie sealed the Roughriders’ 30-20 win over the Argonauts with a timely interception that he returned for a touchdown with under one minute remaining in the fourth quarter.
It was the second pick-six in as many weeks for McKenzie.
Week 12’s top special teams player is Argonauts kicker Noel Prefontaine. The 14-year veteran connected on all four of his field goal attempts in a losing effort to the Riders, splitting the uprights from 18, 41, 35 and 32 yards out. Prefontaine also executed a trick play to perfection, completing a 39-yard pass to Jeremy Unertl on a fake punt attempt on the game’s opening drive.
Finally, Toronto native and Edmonton running back Jerome Messam is this week’s top Canadian. Messam turned in a dominant performance in Edmonton’s 38-23 win over the Tiger-Cats, rushing for 139 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 15 attempts.
In two games against the Ticats, the Toronto native has rushed for 243 yards and four touchdowns.
