Harper and Justin Trudeau help with Alberta flood relief

Over the last three days thousands of people made their way into High River Alberta to give a helping hand with post flood and clean up. Among the volunteers a few could not go unnoticed like the Liberal leader Justin Trudeau and the Prime Minister Stephen Harper. From the pictures that have been released of the two leaders giving a helping hand, it is not the usual traditional cheap political Photo-ops that we are used to.

“The pail is ready, Mr. Trudeau.”

“I think it will be Ok to call me Justin- We are shoveling mud together.”

This was a conversation that took place in the dark basement of a 1912 home on Sunday afternoon between a flood volunteer and the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada.

Trudeau’s communication staff has been saying throughout the weekend that the liberal leader was prepared to get his hands dirty and chipping in but because of the fear they would be a distraction, this media were not invited.

Despite of all this, Trudeau tweeted this on Sunday evening:

A Trudeau’s office spokesperson in a statement said that “together with a team of volunteers, was there for the afternoon.”

Stephen Harper, the prime minister and his wife similarly participated in helping the people of High River on a Friday. Out of their Calgary Stampede schedule, they took time to give a helping hand. A statement told to the High River Times by a witness said that, “Down to the pile, Harper carried a dried wall and assisted on the assembly line.”

From what a conservative party source said, Harper and his wife worked very hard to clean out a damaged basement for several hours. He said that Harper did not entertain the idea of having any media present at the event.

But a picture of Flickr was posted by them.

Elizabeth May, Green Party leader also spent her time volunteering in High River on Friday.

Trudeau, Harper and May should be commended for their work together with thousands of other volunteers. They took time out of their busy schedules to assist the flood victims. Even though a few pictures were released by the parties showing their hard work, it’s a great thing that they made these proceedings no media events.

From what we have seen, it’s our hope that politicians are starting to understand that the public does not appreciate photo-ops that are politically motivated in times of disaster.
