People Still Love the Sound of Phone Sex, says Operator

The world is advancing fast, and thanks to the rise in technological advancements, the sex industry is equally affected. The internet is littered with free porn, and pornstars are easily accessible through webcams and custom websites.

Engaging in phone sex currently might feel a bit "ancient", but according to Alex Mayyasi, phone sex operators still feel very much useful.

Mayyasi interviewed some phone sex operators and discovered that most of them resorted to the sex industry due to their inability to "access the traditional job market".

“For women with physical disabilities, people with mental health problems, and mothers with young children, the flexibility, low barriers to entry, and high-earning potential all make phone sex a practical choice,” Mayyasi wrote.

“Where the safety net of government assistance, charity, and family support falls short, phone sex—and sex work in general—can fill in the gaps.”

Phone sex still thrives despite the vast resources for online pornography and the emergence of virtual sex with the aid of a webcam. Phone sex operators attribute its continuous existence to its uniqueness compared to pornography.

“Many men experience pleasure listening to the sound of a woman's voice without looking at a bright computer screen,” explains Isabella Valentine, a full-time phone sex operator.

Despite the difficulty in acquiring solid data in the phone sex industry, Mayyasi depended on anecdotes and quotes from industry insiders. She also discovered that the industry is equally lucrative for devote phone sex operators.

"Users earn over $10,000 a year but they're mostly devoting about 40-hours or more every week to it," says Erin M., head of customer relations, Niteflirt—a phone sex website.
