Ottawa: Hardcore fans prefer Junior Hockey to NHL

You might think the most loyal and passionate hockey fans in Ottawa ply their trade at Scotiabank Place, but Ian McSorley begs to differ.

McSorley is a hardcore fan of the Ottawa 67s, the major junior hockey team that has skated at the Ottawa Civic Centre since 1967.

The games have been a Friday night tradition for McSorley since 1996, when he bought season tickets and began bringing his two children to the games. He has been a fan, though, since the team was born.

"I used to come as a kid before we even had glass along the side of the boards," McSorley told the CBC's Dan Séguin..

He has now taken the props his kids used to hold — his daughter's old pompoms and his son's old paper helmet — and uses them every game.

McSorley, a UPS deliveryman, has also turned his home into a shrine for the major junior team. Before he knew it, he had become a "Super Fan."

"Everything just kept building up... it's great stress relief and I love coming," he said.

Rabid fans help junior team's impressive attendance

He isn't the only rabid fan in the stands. A couple sections down is the "asylum," where a dozen diehard fans try to make life difficult for 67s opponents.

Those loyal fans help make Ottawa 67s' attendance figures among the best in the Canadian Hockey League. The team has averaged about 7,000 fans per game so far this year.

Many said they do not mind putting themselves "out there" to show their support for the team.

Results show their loyalty is working, too, as the 67s are having another strong season atop the Ontario Hockey League's Eastern Conference.
