A 29-year-old Toronto man died after being found in the freezing cold outside his Allanhurst Drive home in the Royal York Road and Eglinton Avenue West area on Sunday morning.

Paramedics say they were called to the scene at 7:10 a.m., after a neighbour found the man.

The man, who used a wheelchair, had no vital signs and a very low core temperature when found. He was taken to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

On Sunday evening, police identified the deceased as Mark Stroz.

Overnight, Toronto had seen some of its coldest temperatures of the current winter. Environment Canada reported a temperature of –20 C at midnight, with the windchill making it feel like –34. It got colder from there as the early morning progressed.

'It's just so sad'

Toronto police say the man was face down when he was found. The man's death is now under investigation.

It is believed the man had been out with friends on Saturday night and had returned home via taxi. But police say he did not make it inside his home.

Police want to locate and speak to the cab driver.

Steve Hurej, a neighbour and Allanhurst Drive resident, said the young man lived with his mother.

"He was a very self-sufficient young kid," Hurej said, noting that he'd often see Stroz walking his dog and making his way along sidewalks during the winter.

"It's just so sad that this happened to him," said Hurej.
