Book Self-Publishing: Is it a good idea?
More and more people these days turn towards publishing their own book. They are either full of ideas and they can't wait to put all of them on the paper for the world to read and see what a great product was imprinted in their minds, or they are just thinking of all the money they could make if the book proves to be a success.
When you decide to write a book the steps are pretty much simple. You need inspiration to find a good subject and time to write. Then comes the harder part because you need to find someone to edit your work making it look like a real readable book and find a publishing house to publish and sell your material. These would be the steps if you don't think only about the profit you are going to make, but also about the quality of the product.
If you are going into the business to win big, you skip a few steps, like the ones with the editing part and the publishing house, and you try to edit yourself, and unfortunately most times that leaves you with a so-and-so end product, and you try to publish it yourself using a subsidy press, or even take your business straight to a print-on-demand (POD) publishing for maximized profits.
CNET's author and editor David Carnoy talks on an article on self-publishing, about the subsidy publishing, and says that "the key to these companies is that books are printed only when someone orders a copy; neither author nor publisher is forced into buying a bunch of books and having to hawk them."
According to Carnoy, "royalties are better than what "real" publishers offer, but there are caveats, and true self-publishing pros prefer to cut out the subsidy press (which takes a cut) and go straight to a POD printer like Lightning Source to maximize profits". If you are not only focused on profit and you have some patience, you should try to create a great product in the idea that you might hit big later. "If I did it right, I thought, and managed to get it some attention, some "real" publisher might come along and discover what a gem those 20 some odd publishers had passed on", says David Carnoy, which four and half months later managed to sell his book to The Overlook Press telling him that they will publish his second novel as well.
If you decide to write a book you should think about making a great product that will get you more money in the long run rather than winning on a short term and stopping there.
